Roof Repair vs. Replacement: How to Decide (Don't Overpay)

By RAPTOR ROOFING Team · 2026-10-08

The most expensive mistake in roofing is replacing a roof that only needed a repair — or repairing a roof that should have been replaced. Here's how to tell the difference, from someone who looks at DFW roofs every day.

When a Repair Is Enough

A targeted roof repair makes sense when the damage is localized: a few missing shingles after a storm, a small leak around flashing, or isolated hail damage. If the underlying decking is sound and the roof has meaningful life left, repair is the right call and costs a fraction of replacement.

When Replacement Is the Right Call

Replace when the roof is 20+ years old, shingles are curling or shedding granules across large areas, there's widespread storm damage, or leaks have already compromised the decking. Patching a dying roof is throwing good money after bad.

The Age Test

Asphalt shingles typically last 15–25 years in Texas heat, less with heavy hail. If your roof is past 20, a full replacement is usually the better long-term value.

The Free-Inspection Answer

The honest way to decide is an inspection. A free RAPTOR inspection tells you the actual condition of your roof and decking — so you repair only what needs it or replace only when it's genuinely warranted. Call (817) 561-6500.
